Assignments

Since the theme of this class is Gothic representations in popular culture, part of your cultivation of a strong writing aesthetic is to fully emerge yourself within some aspect of Gothic representations in popular culture. As such, you should use the first two assignments as an exploration into which branch of Gothic representations you would like to further study throughout the semester. Immersing yourself into one specific theme (e.g. body politics, religion, crime, race) will not only allow you to fully understand a specific branch of this genre, but it will also be much easier to write about by the end of the semester. Tracing one theme of the Gothic throughout each of the assignments means you will likely be able to recycle many of your sources. Since this length of this course is shortened from a normal semester, it will be imperative to focus your time on crafting your writing rather than becoming an expert in the Gothic.
