Assignment Prompt and Context
In this paper, students will analyze how a particular essay related to the Gothic tries to persuade its readers through the use of argumentative claims and evidence. Understanding how arguments realistically function is essential for creating your own original, effective argument. This assignment will help you to develop an awareness of the structure and function of academic argument. An argument analysis furthermore provides the opportunity to employ principles learned in class (i.e. establishing a thesis, using credible evidence to support every claim, considering the relationship between language/context/purpose). This assignment allows you to analyze an argument in two separate ways. You will only need to choose one of the following options to complete the argument analysis.

1. Literacy Analysis

First, choose* an essay/article available on the bibliography page of this blog. In your analysis, you will want to address the following in relation to your chosen essay/article.
  • Identify the author's thesis/main argument or interpretation of the text
  • Describe the types of evidence used by the author to defend the thesis
  • Assess whether the evidence is logical and/or effective
  • Identify the assumptions made in the essay and assess whether readers are likely to agree with those assumptions
Additionally, your analysis will present a thesis and offer convincing evidence in support of every claim made in your argument.

2. Visual Analysis

First, choose* a visual text from the list below:

Your analysis will analyze how your chosen visual text uses 1-2 type(s) of rhetorical appeal(s) (i.e. ethos, logos, pathos) to persuade its audience. It is imperative to critically investigate how and why the text plays to cultural values, emotions, and beliefs. You will need to address the following regarding your visual text:
  • Identify the purpose of the advertisement in question
  • Describe the strategies used by the advertisement to appeal to its audience
  • Assess whether the strategies are effective and why
  • Identify the assumptions made in the essay and assess whether readers are likely to agree with those assumptions
Additionally, your analysis must propose a thesis and provide convincing, relevant evidence in support of every claim being made.

*For each option, you have the ability to locate a text outside of those provided. If you choose to find an outside text, you will need to approve this with the instructor beforehand.
