7.14 Homework

Tonight, please determine the topic you want to explore for your definition argument. For this assignment, you are open to writing with one of the prompts provided on the definition assignment page.

To choose your topic, keep these guidelines in mind:

  1. Your topic must question the definition of a term or the larger category it does/does not belong to.
  2. Avoid topics which are too vague or generic. Determining whether something is "good" or "bad" is not acceptable. Also stay away from topics which tend to be too emotionally inflicted and personal, such as defining "love" or "friendship."
  3. Avoid cliched topics, such as "Obamacare is helpful to society" or "abortion is not murder" type of arguments.
  4. Your argument must be debatable. So, arguing that a cat is an animal....nobody is going to disagree with you, meaning that you have not chosen an effective kairotic moment for your paper. So don't do it.
  5. Think critically about how  you will define your term. Are you going to compare it to another term which belongs in the same category? Are you going to describe the parameters of the category and explain how it is being argued?
Also,  remember we are meeting in the computer lab tomorrow in CBD.

Sign up for a conference time via Google Docs. DON'T remove other people's names from a time slot. It's rude and a real jerky move. You MUST attend your conference; missing a scheduled conference counts as an absence. Plus, you will hurt my feelings :(
